SAMETHYST

Crystalline quartz in shades of purple ,liace , or mauve is called amethyst ,A stone traditionally worn to  A reddish purple tinge when viewed from different angles . Usually faceted as a mixed –or step-cut ,amethyst has distinctive inclusions which lookl like tiger-stripes ,thumb-prints ,or feathers ,Some amethyst is heat –treated to change the coloured to yellow ,producing citrine.crystals that are part citrine and part amethyst are called Ametrine .

OCCURRENCE:Amethyst is found in alluvial deposits or in geodes .some of the largest geodes sontaning amethyst are in brazil . amethyst from the urals (Russia )has a reddish tinge ,Canadian amethyst is violet .Other localies include Srilanksa ,India,Uguay ,Madagascar ,the USA ,Germany ,Astralia ,Namibia, and Zambia .

REMARK: Poor –quality material is often tumbled to make beads .If a stone is pale it may be set in a closed setting or have foif placed behind it to enhance the colour .Amethyst has been imitated by glas abd synthetic corundum.

CITRINE

Citrine is the yellow or golden yellow varity of quartz .The yellow coloration ,due to the presence of iron ,is also responsible for the name ,drived from then word “citrus”.Natural citrine is usually a pale yellow ,but rare ,most citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst (see oppsite).

OCCURENCR: Gem-quality  citrine is extremely  rare .The best material is found in Brazil ,Spane ,Madagadcar, and the former USSR.

REMARK: Citrine has been used to imitate topaz and was once called Brszilian topaz .
